    China Camp Hike

    February 24, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
    Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association

This interpretive hike is a very gradually sloping 5-miles round-trip to the site known as China Camp. We’ll explore a circa 1910 SD&A survey camp used when seeking a route through Carrizo Gorge, and a separate construction camp occupied while building two nearby railroad tunnels. We’ll hike at a social pace through soft sand and on an old rocky jeep road. We’ll call it a success if we find the famed “powderkeg” shack. This archaeologically sensitive area must be respected, and no souvenirs can be taken. Bring water, layered clothing, snacks, a trail lunch, and other essentials. Meet at the ABDNHA parking lot at 8 a.m.to carpool for the approx. 2-hour drive on paved and sometimes sandy and rocky dirt roads to the trailhead. A high-clearance 4WD vehicle is required. No charge, but space limited. Call to reserve, 760-767-3098.
